Delivering Innovative Solutions:
Dr. Dror Paley activity in research field goes in two directions to develop (create/invent) and to improve both procedures and
devices. Some of his ideas were patented. More information about it in CURRICULUM VITAE.

Until now he has developed (created/invented) more than 100 new operative procedures for bone and soft tissue reconstruction
of congenital, developmental and post-traumatic limb disorders.

Some of the new methods and operative procedures developed and performed by Dr. Paley are.:

Superhip for the hip reconstruction for congenital femoral deficiency

Superknee for reconstruction of the knee aliments in congenital femoral deficiency

Superankle for reconstruction of the ankle in fibular hemimelia

      Patellar arthroplasty for tibial hemimelia

      Ulnarization for radial club hand

      Elbow reconstruction for ulna clubhand

Percutaneous Gigli saw and focal dome osteotomies

Fixator Assisted Nailing and Lengthening over nails (LON)

Multiplier Method for prediction of leg length discrepancy at maturity

Dedication to Research:
Dr. Paley has published over 100 articles in the peer-reviewed literature and has authored and edited 5 books and 38 book
chapters.  Full list of publishing position is included in part –
SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS and CURRICULUM VITAE.

He has been the principle investigator on several research grants.

His research on deformity correction lead to the CORA methodology which is published in detail in his classic on deformity
correction:

Principles of Deformity Correction (Springer Verlag, 2002) is an 800-page textbook. This book has set a new standard
in the understanding and treatment of limb deformities. This book has  been reprinted 4 times and is considered an orthopedic
bestseller. This combined with the exercise book Principles of Deformity Correction Exercise Workbook (Springer Verlag, 2003)
was awarded the best illustrated medical textbook in 2003

Dedication to Teaching:
Since 1987-2001 he was professor of Orthopedics, chief of Pediatric Orthopedics and co-director and founder of the
Maryland Center for Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction at the University of Maryland.  On more than one occasion, he was
awarded the Orthopedic Residents Best Teacher Award.

He has lectured and has demonstrated surgeries in more than 50 countries.  Dr. Dror Paley organized the first Ilizarov
course in 1987 and the first deformity course in 1989.

He has organized and has run the internationally attended Annual Baltimore Limb Deformity Course since 1989. This
course has been successful among surgeons around the world since 1989.

He provides training for specialists from around the world through a fellowship program.

He has attended at orthopedic conferences, in the US and in over 70 countries.  In 1989 he served as the first president
of
ASAMI North America (Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society). More information in CURRICULUM VITAE

•        He was twice awarded the best teaching award by the residents of the University of Maryland.

•        Implantable limb lengthening: Dr. Paley has the worlds largest experience with the ISKD implantable limb lengthening
device (over 250 surgeries performed). The ISKD is the only FDA approved implantable limb lengthening device (Orthofix Inc).
Dr. Paley has used or collaborated with the inventors  of 4 other implantable limb lengthening (Albizzia, Orthogon, Phenix,
Fitbone).

•        Six axis deformity correction: Dr. Paley introduced the Ilizarov external fixator (the first six axis deformity correction
device) to North America in 1986. Since then he has become an expert in the use of the Taylor Spatial Frame external fixator
(Smith and Nephew) and now has the largest experience in the world in the use of this device for deformity correction and
lengthening. He was instrumental in developing the software for computer radiographic planning with this device (TraumaCad)
and the animated teaching videos and literature that are used worldwide to teach orthopedic surgeons how to use TSF for
deformity correction. Dr. Paley is also actively involved in the development of the first monolateral six axis external fixator
(SixFix, Biomet).

Awards, Honors and Charitable Achievements:
Dr. Paley has received several awards, including a Gubernatorial Citation for Outstanding Contributions in Orthopedic surgery in
1990 by the Governor of Maryland the Pauwel's Medal in Clinical Biomechanics in 1997 by the German-Speaking Countries
Orthopedic Association. Best paper/poster award by
SICOT, AAOS, POSNA, AORS.  He has also been made an honorary member

Orthopedic Conditions. Over the past 23 years I have dedicated my career to improve the lives of
patients with these limb problems.  I have performed more than 10,000 limb reconstruction surgeries to
correct deformity or lengthen limbs. I developed many of the most advanced surgical methods used for
lengthening and deformity correction and I wrote the book on deformity correction. The purpose of this
website is for education of patients and their families and friends on the techniques available for such limb
reconstruction. Feel free to contact me if you have questions or are seeking advice on the management of
a limb reconstruction problem.
